A Misguided Argument Against A National Language

Senator Barack Obama’s discussion yesterday on issues of language displayed a shocking combination of ignorance and arrogance. He begins by criticizing those who want to pass “English only” legislation, which is a pejorative term for making English our official language – a position supported by 85 percent of Americans. Making English our official language would do nothing to inhibit our children from learning a second language; it would only make English the official language of government. The “English only” charge is a straw man.
