Real Change Now: The Opportunity to Listen to the American People

With the victory of Governor Huckabee and Senator Obama in the Iowa caucuses, “change” rapidly became the buzzword that defined the 2008 primaries. In New Hampshire, Senator McCain rallied independents behind his record of reform in Washington and Senator Clinton scored an upset win by rapidly shifting her sales pitch from focusing on her experience to focusing on her track record of change. Tuesday in Michigan, we saw this pattern emerge again, with a victory by Mitt Romney who emphasized economic issues to illustrate his message that "Washington is broken."

This clear message being sent by the voters begs an obvious question. If Americans want real change, why should they have to wait until 2009 to get it? Why can’t the President and Congress respond immediately?
Earlier this week I encouraged President Bush to use his State of the Union address to outline a series of dramatic changes and challenge Congress to pass them this year. These changes should be issues overwhelmingly popular with the American people.

For example:

 • English as the official language of government;
 • Accelerating energy solutions through the establishment of large financial prizes for technological breakthroughs;
 • Lower the cost of gas by building more oil refineries in America;
 • Cut carbon emissions by investing in nuclear power;
 • Implementing a prosperity agenda that includes an optional, simple flat tax;
 • Protecting America by making it a crime to advocate terrorist activities.

Each of these items has the support of a majority of Democrats, Independents, and Republicans. I outline even more of these “tripartisan” issues in my book, Real Change. In addition, I offer a step-by-step, issue-by-issue guide on how citizen-leaders can bring these and other “real change” to their local, state, and federal government.

It may surprise some to learn that America is united on so many issues. It certainly will come as a surprise to those in the elite media who have insisted on peddling the falsehood that America is divided between red states and blue states. The truth is that Americans are united on almost every important issue facing the country. The real division is between “red, white, and blue” America and a fringe on the Left that has control of our news media, universities, and government bureaucracies.

America is an overwhelmingly center-right nation. The first chapter in Real Change talks about “the myth of red vs. blue” where I outline the enormous divide between the values of the American people and the values of the left. Americans overwhelmingly believe that lower taxes are better for America, the danger from radical Islam is real, and that entrepreneurs and not union controlled bureaucrats will create the innovations that make life better for Americans.

I’m proud to be blogging on the Freedom's Watch website today because its mission of defending America against radical Islam and advancing market based solutions to domestic challenges is not only critical for our nation’s future; it has an overwhelming base of support in America, deeply rooted in our values and principles. As we work together to advance these goals it is important to remember to advance them with confidence. After all, we have the American people on our side.

Just as the Jeffersonians did when they defeated the Federalists and just as the Lincoln Republicans, progressives, and Reagan Republicans did when they cast out the old order, we can rally the American people to overwhelm the status quo in Washington and the state capitals. That’s why I wrote Real Change. That’s why I founded American Solutions. And that’s why I’m excited to be working with Freedom's Watch as we work together toward this goal.

Re elite media: Who could more aptly be described as elite media than Rupert Murdoch whose voice is spread by his carefully screened employees to spread on and to 3 continints, his ideas about war and every other idea in his head? The Murdoch War Machine profits by pandering and jingo-ing to (not-so?) closet demagogues. I ask, "Who could be more elitist that that, yet play victim at every opportunity to the boogieman of elite media?" I tell you its Orwell's 1984 (the book) all over again.

If you wait for Congress to make the changes Newt mentions you will be waiting for a long time. The American people need to bypass Congress and initiate change.

Our founding fathers went to great lengths to ensure the power remained in the hands of the "people". The primary power given to us is the ability to elect leaders to carry out our wishes. Our founding fathers brilliantly understood that a time would come when the elected officials would not listen to the people or would abuse the power given to them. It was in that case that the founding fathers gave us another option...Article V of the constitution.

Article V allows for the states to call for a convention and propose amendments. A constitution convention would give the people a chance to be heard and would allow us to rally around democracy and start talking about America's future.

I would add bi-partisan ideas to Newt's list like "term limits" and "balanced budgets". My blog is focused on keeping America great and a convention seems to be the fastest way to make this happen (http://blog.proamericastore.com).

Newt,
Somehow, some way, you need to get back into office. I think you would be an amazing vice-president, and as the actual duties of the office are fairly limited, you would be free to continue refining policy proposals and pushing America forward. Hopefully whoever is the GOP nominee will see the light and pick you, and hopefully you would accept. Keep up the great work!

Newt,

I thought you were a history buff, but I guess that isn't so. You made a comment here about the 'Jeffersonians' defeating the Federalists, yet I don't think you really remember who or what the Federalist party was all about, nor what the Republican Democrat party of Jefferson was.

George Washington, Hamilton and Madison were founders of the Federalists, a Constitutionalist party that is what this 'conservative' movement of today is all about. Reread your history, you may well find the antagonistic Jefferson was a troublemaker for the US in those early days, even so much as getting the British to return and sack and burn down the original White House! It was the Federalist Washington, coming out of retirement to muster the militia to oust the British and Hamilton who was able to establish accords with Britain not to have them do it again.

Madison the Federalist was the person most responsible for writing the Constitution; Jefferson spent years conniving and insisting on the Bill of Rights, which eventually were ratified by Congress. Hamilton the Federalist was the person who established the Federal reserve bank, which, without that institution, our country would have gone bankrupt by Jefferson and the 'Slave Power' Rep/Dem party that took us into the civil war. Watch what you write; I see your moderate GOP showing....

You are such a great ideas man. I would love to have had you as a proffessor. It was my hope that you would run for President with Condi Rice as vice president.
I love it when you talk about the problems of the pubic schools. I couldn't agree more.
We need to tackel these big problems with big ideas.
End The Public School System!

Aetius728 sez, "Ask them if they believe the gov't is inefficient and messes up everything it touches. I guarantee you they'll agree. Tell them that the gov't can control their insurance, or they can. Explain that the goal is to make insurance companies compete over their business"

Reply: Most anybody who has ever had Medicare (before D) knows that it is fantastic...far better and responsive than most any private insurance. I've had both. I know. Do you? Or are you just spouting the usual propaganda? This country has had how many decades to get private insurance right, so why can't it get right? Other countries with national single payer healthcare would have a revolt on their hands if they were forced to return to a private system like the US. They too have seen both sides, and would know what they are talking about.

Accelerating energy solutions through the establishment of large financial prizes for technological breakthroughs is a clear attempt for more government subsidies for the oil industry; clearly socialism for the oil corporations. I would propose if the government is to plough money into the oil area they ought to own the assets they plough money into.

Implementing a prosperity agenda that includes an optional, simple flat tax is socialism for the rich. That old mantra of a flat tax is as dead as the regressive agenda behind it.

Protecting America by making it a crime to advocate terrorist activities would make most of our political class indictable. I would suppose that it would have to have a grandfather clause to keep all of our former politicos out of jail.

There are so many secrets in Pandora's Box

First of all, fstaheli, there are monsters. Why must people like you always stick your head in the sand? The difference between the Soviet Union in the Cold War and the Radical Muslims today is that the Soviets were rational(mostly) and atheist-therefore they did not believe in an afterlife, and were very interested in their own self preservation, which allowed for a policy of mutually assured destruction on both sides, thereby avoiding major conflict.(Hows that for a runon sentence!?)

Anyway, Newt I largely agree, but am disappointed that you have bought the man made global warming propaganda. And most American's could care less about "freemarket solutions." What needs to be presented to them is a choice-more government control over their lives, or more personal freedom.

Go talk to twenty people at random about healthcare. First, propose freemarket solutions. Then frame it in terms of personal control versus government control. Ask them if they believe the gov't is inefficient and messes up everything it touches. I guarantee you they'll agree. Tell them that the gov't can control their insurance, or they can. Explain that the goal is to make insurance companies compete over their business.

I'll end my long comment with my often stated assertion that our biggest obstacle is the economic populism being pushed by the left.

It seems there always has to be a monster to destroy. The Communists are gone (or are they---Putin and China?), so now it has to be Radical Islam, which has so much less ability to harm America that it is not even funny.

If you could stick with the free market principles and setting an example of liberty for the rest of the world to follow, I would be impressed. But as it is, on this past 9/11 I nominated you for dog catcher.

I and a growing number of people are so sick of the American establishment empire builders that we could puke.

If I'm misunderstanding your perspective on this issue, then I will apologize, but you'll have to convince me first.
