Keep Fighting
By Megan Ortagus :: 10 Comments :: Email to a friend

Recently, a friend sent me this judicious quote by General George S. Patton, “War is just like boxing. When you get your opponent on the ropes you must keep punching the hell out of him and not let him recover.”

2008 is the year to keep fighting.

As our brave troops continue defeating al Qaeda and America’s enemies in Iraq through Operation Phantom Phoenix and Operation Iron Harvest, we must do our part to carry the banner of victory at home; to continue aggressively countering those in the the anti-war community who seek America’s surrender and ultimate defeat.

Conventional wisdom said it was over in Iraq and that we lost. Vietnam-esque phrases like Senator George Aiken’s “declare victory and go home,” could be heard among the Washington chattering class and in the halls of Congress, but General David Petraeus’ counterinsurgency strategy - the surge - proved the elites wrong.

The future of Iraq remains tenuous, but we have new reason to hope with the recent passage of a de-Baathification law that provides a major boost towards national reconciliation by the Iraqi Parliament – one of the political benchmarks that many politicians claimed was elusive.

Now is not the time to become complacent, to go backwards or to advocate withdrawal – now is the time to keep fighting.

Unite for Victory

Yup! We're gonna have a chance to keep on fighting. We are entering a reccession, and just like the last downturn was turned around within one, count 'em, ONE day (You could look it up) of when Congress gave W the chance to have his war. This next recession will likely be eventually dealt with similarly. We are a warring people, if it serves our purposes. Now you know one of the reasons why.

You don't know who the opponents are. They don't wear a certain color trunks. The people this war primarily hurts are the people who fund it. Keep punching, you will knock us out soon.

WOW Megan! Have you thought of writing a book? You should do it.
Keep hope alive.

Here's a real comment from a real person. I am loving your nomination process with B. Hussein Obama and Bill Clinton. I always thought a former president(small letters) was limited to 2 terms.
What I am PO'd about is that the Rebublican debate is on Pravda tonight. Why in the hell do we debate on that network. First of all, the moron hosts have no clue about either sports or politics. Secondly, NOBODY WATCHES THAT CHANNEL.
Who The hell decided this?

This is an incredibly insightful posting. The importance of this mission and the war in Iraq cannot be overstated. Unfortunately this information isn't making it into mainstream media. Maybe Megan should try her hand at replacing some of the empty talking heads on CNN, or Fox News, or MSNBC.

It will take more than a blog posting get that message across.

To the Action Center!

Miss Megyn is absolutely correct on all points. I have many friends now in Iraq, including active duty combatants, government civilian employees and Defense contractors. All tell me that the success of the combat troops breeds more success in areas all across the kinetic and non-kinetic fronts. Success begets success; and while all of my friends were proud to do their duty during the 'darker days' before the surge, knowing that their hard and dangerous labors are paying off brightens all of their days now.

My only fear about our future in Iraq and Afghanistan is that the "Pelosoids" on Capitol HIll will be able to finagle some sort of forced, premature withdrawal. Failure begets failure and the defeatists among us at home seem to want nothing less than America's total humiliation in Southwest Asia.

Yes, indeed, 2008 is the year to keep fighting -- in the overseas theaters and on the home front.

My apologies, ma'am; I misspelled your name...won't happen again.

It seems that most of your comments are written by the same person--same sentence structure, same courtly language, etc. Do you ever get real comments from real people?
