Troop Levels - Not a Partisan Issue
By Eric Livingston :: 6 Comments :: Email to a friend

In his column in today's Washington Post, Jackson Diehl discusses America's way forward in Iraq and the battle in Washington regarding troop levels needed to maintain the successes of 2007.

...for once, saying that the next six to 12 months will win or lose the war just might be right.

That's not because Iraqis have suddenly developed the capacity to meet the unrealistic timelines drawn up in Washington ever since 2003 -- when the Pentagon planned to reduce U.S. troops to a skeleton force of 30,000 within six months of the capture of Baghdad. On the contrary, Petraeus and Crocker have spent the past year attempting to drive home the point that the U.S. goal of a stable, democratizing Iraq, if it can be achieved at all, will require an American commitment well beyond any of the timetables discussed in Washington -- despite the remarkable success of this year's military surge.

So the next six to 12 months are not crucial because of what will happen in Iraq -- where, at best, violence will continue to decline incrementally, while Sunnis, Shiites and Kurds make painful and partial progress toward political settlements. The test will come in the United States -- where first the Pentagon and the White House, and then the country, will decide whether to invest enough resources in Iraq to keep the hope of eventual success alive.

In a telephone interview last week, Ambassador Crocker, America's diplomatic point person in Iraq, may have said it best:

"At the most fundamental level there is a view [in Iraq] that things are moving in the right direction; that security is improving; that the surge has worked; that Iraqi forces are more numerous and more capable; and that therefore why on earth would we abandon a winning proposition?"

To read more about the situation on the ground in Iraq, click here to read General Petraeus' year-end letter to the troops.  In this letter, Petraus offers a frank and honest assessment of where we are, and some thoughts on the past year and how to proceed.

Heads we win...tails you lose. If Iraq seems a losing proposition, the US must do more. If Iraq seems a winning proposition, the US must do more. Same old tired Charlie Brown, Lucy and the football shtick. Thank you, Mr. Bush, for this foreign entanglement that may never end. Have you any more bright legacy surprise gifts to bestow upon us before you leave to begin making some easy money doing partisan appearances for profit, as you have said you "expect" to do? Now that Pakistan is in the front burner and Iran is on the side burner, both bigger security issues than Iraq ever could have been, did our Iraq adventure make the US military more ready or less ready going into the future?

A brief synopsis of comrade keeemosabe: endless gripes, groans, and disingenuous accusations. No concrete answers (other then quitting) and childish expectations when it comes to something as serious as this war.

Hey keeemosabe, you could be honest and just admit that you're either one of those MoveOn.Org operatives, an Anarchist, or just a full-blown Communist!

I'm sure you are, at the very least, a "useful idiot" of the 'Socialist International' Movement.

As all of us with mature (grown-up) minds know, our nation's foreign entanglements began before 'we' were even a nation - increased considerably due to the Second World War - and will now likely never, ever come to an end.

If you can offer no concrete options yourself as to how to 'deal' with the serious international problems we face (other then just quitting) do not end your comments by asking infantile questions.

Unfortunately "keeemosabe" is a sad, and truly pitiful, waste of a human mind. No, that's far too kind - you're really just a complete waste of human flesh.

As you're not educated enough to be taken seriously by any 'intelligent' person, I'm choosing to stoop to your level of intellect and simply insult you.

I await your venomous, disingenuous, infantile comments aimed at ripping my intelligence, integrity, and wisdom with bated breath. If you believe this, then I've a bridge in Brooklyn you might be interested in buying.

Thank you for your ad hominem attack. It shows the depth of your intellect. I welcome you as a wonderful foil. I see you and your administration can take no criticism...a sign of your weakness via arrogance. Y'all think you are perfection embodied. I have layed out some better ideas, but the site owners removed them (because they prefer hannity insanity demogogue lamentations to thought.) You and those like you who portray "Mr. Bush" as a victim of hate have shown your hate each and every day from the time Bill Clinton was elected, and wail about the hate you see of your Bush-baby's Extra bonus Iraq War mistake. It's very funny really. Thanks for the laughs.

Demogorgon mistakes criticism and thought for treason. His answer is to praise arrogant reckless empire-building behavior, support mistakes strategic and tactical, not knowing the difference. But will you please be consistent with your go ahead and go-along to get along advice...even if Hillary is your president?

I actually agree with Cheney more than you do.

NO! I will not stand by as this administration and its cronies push more lies and half-truths on the American people through their media contacts.

The Pentegon wanted to cut troop level huh? Sounds like he is implying this was a decision made by the military doesn’t it? Well its bull and Peters knows it is. I want to ask why people still fall for these lies but I already know. I believed the lies for several years out of ignorance and trust that this government would not send me to fight an illegal war of aggression initiated by an imperial president. BUT IT HAPPENED.

However, back to my original point. As I have posted and cited before the decision to cut troop levels came from the executive branch. I mean damnit the military war planning was counting on having a substantial troop level after the fall of Baghdad (hell that includes the Iraqi Army which we were waiting for like idiots). The Army’s 4th Infantry Division (who ended up just replacing us about two weeks after Baghdad fell) just got in theater, since their original plan for them to Invade from the North fell through. Then they cancelled the 101st’s deployment. This is not some crazy lefty talk, it military history.

This is from a interview for the Washington Times, Published April 29, 2003 (we unofficially took Baghdad on April 9) http://www.gertzfile.com/gertzfile/article4.29.03.html
“He also said in yesterday's interview that fewer troops will be needed to keep the peace in Iraq than the 135,000 there. ‘We're are not going to need as many people to do peacekeeping as we needed to fight the war,’ Mr. Wolfowitz said.

But hey it’s not like anyone said we need more troops before the war started right? What? People did? Well I’m sure advice like that wasn’t dismissed or anything. What’s that it was? Hmm.. guess I’ll just stick me fingers in my ears and yell “la-la-la-I can’t hear you- la-la-la”

"The idea that it would take several hundred thousand U.S. forces I think is far off the mark," Mr. Rumsfeld said. General Shinseki gave his estimate in response to a question at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday: "I would say that what's been mobilized to this point — something on the order of several hundred thousand soldiers — are probably, you know, a figure that would be required." http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issues/iraq/attack/consequences/2003/0228pentagoncontra.htm

Lastly, I again reiterative, those of you who continue to speak hollow thank you's to our troops need to man-up and Enlist! Congress Authorized an increase in force levels of the Army and Marines. Combine that with the lax entry standards, you can enlist in the Army at 42 (you can get a waiver if your older btw), you can even be a convicted felon, and there’s no reason why a war supporter shouldn’t enlist. Now is your chance! The mere fact that YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU I’m sure will inspire you all to MAN-UP and ENLIST! Don’t YOU love your country enough to fight for it?! ENLIST! www.marines.com
