Below is an open letter from John Ellsworth, whose son was killed in action in Iraq in 2004, to his Senator from Michigan. If you feel these thoughts would also apply to your representation in Washington, please contact your Congressman or Senator today.
An Open letter to Senator Carl Levin form A Gold Star Father
December 27th, 2007
A year in review
Senator Levin, I know you have been a busy man this year and you must be tired after all of those votes to withdraw from Iraq, amendments to tie funding to timelines and staying up all night on the Senate floor to make your point, but please take a minute to read this letter from a Proud Father of a Fallen Marine.
I would have loved to have sat down with you while I was in Washington D.C. in July, but your staff said you were too busy. Just ask your “Legislative Correspondent” Justin Harlem, I’m sure he will remember me. I came into the office with 2 Proud Military Iraq Veterans. (I’m glad to see that you weren’t too busy for those nice ladies dressed in pink –Code Pink, demonstrating at the capital that day though. You and Mrs. Pelosi found time to join them on stage for a rally. That was really something, after all, my son died for those rights to demonstrate.) I also wanted to see you in September while in D.C. but I understand from your staff people that you were a little busy with a Senate vote “To express the sense of the Senate that General David H. Petraeus, Commanding General, Multi-National Force-Iraq, deserves the full support of the Senate and strongly condemn personal attacks on the honor and integrity of General Petraeus and all members of the United States Armed Forces. You voted “NAY” by the way. Your vote confused me a little because only 9 months earlier (January 26th) you and your colleagues confirmed him 81-0 with 19 “Not voting”. What happened between that time? I’ll tell you what happened, We started to see success in Iraq and you didn’t want to hear it.
I actually traveled to Washington D.C. from Michigan (Yes, I am one of your constituents), to meet with my Legislators and hear General Petraeus’ testimony. I was interested in what he had to say and NOT what the Media wanted me to hear.
I wanted to talk to you about progress in Iraq and about all of the GOOD THINGS our men and women of the military are doing. I wanted to tell you about my son LCPL Justin Ellsworth USMC and the difference he made in the lives of the Iraqi people and the world. I wanted to tell you that you needed to “Give credit where credit was due”. But it has become increasingly apparent from your stand on Iraq that you will ignore even the most obvious signs of progress in order to divide the nation even further to promote your partisan politics. The rhetoric and the lack of foresight on your behalf have proven that you have taken this to the next partisan step. I find it difficult to believe that we have become so divided as a nation that we have to define ourselves as Republicans or Democrats instead of AMERICANS.
On one hand, you claim that the Iraqi Government is a dysfunctional system and can get nothing done, but on the other hand… you and your colleagues certainly don’t provide a very good blue print for them to follow now do you?
This letter is not sent to you to point out your voting record or erroneous stands you have taken over the last year, but to encourage you to do better in 2008.
For at the end of year 2007, it was “Nothing Accomplished” in the halls of Congress.
P.S.
Oh, by the way... You might want to watch the company you keep, those “nice ladies” in pink... Turns out that they aren’t so nice... they called my son a murderer and threw things at me.
Respectfully,
John M. Ellsworth,
Proud Father of LCPL Justin M. Ellsworth, U.S.M.C.
K.I.A. / O.I.F. 13 NOV 04 – Fallujah, Iraq
Gone but NEVER forgotten

There isn't a thing I could write here that would do this letter justice. I can't, for a single moment, contemplate the level of discipline required by this father to write such a 'civil' letter to one of our nation's most dishonorable politicians.
However this letter does remind me of why the correspondence I've previously sent to certain US Senators, including 'Mr.' Levin, has been far less 'polite' - for the extreme level of contempt I personally hold for such pompous scum as this... can't be written of even here.
I do recognize a "Hanoi Jane" when I see one!

Dear Mr. Ellsworth,
Firstly, allow me to express how truly sorry I am for the loss of your son Justin. As an Iraq vet, and as a Marine who understands the anger and frustration of seeing dead Americans on the dirty streets of Iraq please understand that what I say, I say with respect.
I agree that it is incredibly shameful that Mr. Levin did not have the courteously to meet with you but I would like to address the issue that you raised about “partisan politics.” Sir I have always voted Republican up until about two years ago when I decided to research and figure out what the hell is going on in Iraq and why we’re losing. I’m mean, I left Iraq with cheering kids and men offering cartons of cigarettes as a thank you. After seriously studying the issues it is clear that the increased hatred against America in the region has legitimate economical and cultural origins that this administration has energized.
Right after the invasion the Marines were sent home and Army units on the way were cancelled. Both decisions were pushed by administration official over military objections. The administration then proceeded to transform Iraq’s economic, public, government institutions in ways meant not to benefit the people of Iraq but meant to benefit America’s monied interests. Sir, it’s not partisan politics; it’s simply more Americans realizing that what we are doing in Iraq is counter-productive, is increasing anti-Americanism, contributes to needless loss of life, and provides huge profits to private corporations, just to name a few reasons.
I confess that I had a turning point while in Iraq that allowed me to say “f*ckem, kill em’ all” because I didn’t care who died as long as they weren’t American military. However, after coming home you realize that what we are doing is creating more enemies and contributes to an endless war. And an endless war that is ideal for all the war profiteers like Halliburton KBR, even Boeing and the like.
Sir we’re fighting and dying out there in Iraq for a select few of monied interests. And while I’m sorry the Code Pink people you saw that day acted in a shameful way I hope that you don’t paint them all with such a broad brush. In my limited experience with code pink members, they were incredibly friendly and generous to me and my Iraq friends. Moreover, I hope you condemn all groups who dishonor our fallen and their families such as when members of the group “Gathering of Eagles” which violently assaulted a Gold Star father last September http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/downloads/carlos/index.htm
Regarding the “success” of the surge, doesn’t the success of having more boots on the ground prove the deliberate lack of planning and the dismissal of Gen. Shinseki by administration officials were preventable mistakes? http://www.globalpolicy.org/security/issues/iraq/attack/consequences/2003/0228pentagoncontra.htm "The idea that it would take several hundred thousand U.S. forces I think is far off the mark," Mr. Rumsfeld said. General Shinseki gave his estimate in response to a question at a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing on Tuesday: "I would say that what's been mobilized to this point — something on the order of several hundred thousand soldiers — are probably, you know, a figure that would be required."
That all this death is a direct result of this administrations incompetent decisions. Yet you still have faith that they should be trusted with the lives of our young men and women. I mean we’re arming the same groups we were fighting with previously and the possibility exists that the same people who killed your son are now being armed by us http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,,2100596,00.html, No sir, I refuse to sit by as Bush and his criminal cronies continue to destroy our military and send us into an endless war to serve as IED bait while the rest of this country is asked to sacrifice nothing. And yes the majority of my brothers and sister in arms do not support the war in Iraq. http://www.bloomberge.com/apps/news?pid=20601073&sid=a9eBP4ZM28G8&refer=election
To all those who disagree I have great news! Congress has granted an increase in the size of the Army and Marines! Combined that with the lax entry standards, you can enlist in the Army at 42 (you can still get a waiver if your older btw), so now there’s no reason why a war supporter shouldn’t enlist. Now is your chance! The mere fact that YOUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU I’m sure will inspire you all to MAN-UP and ENLIST! www.marines.com

With all due respect, I do not believe Mr. Elsworth and his claims about Code Pink. Does he really have any proof to back them up? I am saddened over Mr. Elsworth's son's death -- and it proves, once again, that we NEVER should have gone to Iraq. Congrats, Erine 1812, for a brave response to Mr. Elsworth. (I'm sure the freepers will jump all over him, but they are in the minority now, whether they like it or not.)

Mr Ellsworth: I have the utmost respect for you because of the class and restraint you have shown in the face of the disregard and disrespect to you from your elected representatives and others. Your son is an American Hero. Semper Fi, LCPL Justin Ellsworth. To all the voters in Mich; I hope you wake up and throw this .... out. We got rid of our ...., John "phony" Edwards. I hope those "code puke" ladies turn brown.
