The Continued Presence of Al Qaeda
By Eric Livingston :: 0 Comments :: Email to a friend

The Associated Press is reporting that Osama bin Laden is set to release another tape, this time discussing Iraq and an anti-US and anti-Iraqi government terrorist group called the Islamic State of Iraq.  This is just the most recent of a number of messages this year, as Al Qaeda has been seen stepping up its outreach efforts in an attempt to gain more international supporters.

This tape reaffirms Al Qeada's and Bin Laden's committment to continuing terrorist operations in Iraq, and underscores the need for U.S. troops to remain in the region.  This also comes one day after Al Qaeda claimed responsibility for the assassination of former Pakistani Prime Minister and current candidate Benazir Bhutto.

Ms. Bhutto was a longtime advocate for secular democracy in Iraq and had taken courageous stands against radical islamic elements in Pakistan, and had also questioned authoritarian steps taken by the Musharraf government.

Al Qaeda and other radical fringe elements have the most to gain from Bhutto's death, and they're sure to try to exploit the circumstances.  Terrorist groups thrive on violence, instability, and political chaos - exactly the situation on the ground in Pakistan today as Bhutto is laid to rest.

These events serve to remind us that Al Qaeda and all radical islamic terrorist factions continue to be an active threat towards United States national security - both at home and abroad.  As these elements are beaten back in Iraq, they will turn their attention to other targets, such as Afghanistan and Pakistan.  The United States must continue to stand strong to protect our freedom and ensure that these forces of terror are defeated around the globe.
