The Hill is reporting on Senator Clinton's astonishing 2.3 billion dollars in earmark requests for the next budget year.
Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) has requested nearly $2.3 billion in federal earmarks for 2009, almost three times the largest amount received by a single senator this year.
The Democratic presidential candidate’s staggering request comes at a time when Congress remains engaged in a heated debate over spending federal dollars on parochial projects.
It also has gained traction on the campaign trail. Presumptive GOP nominee Sen. John McCain (Ariz.), a longtime foe of earmarks, has called for eliminating what he dubs “wasteful Washington spending.” Democratic front-runner Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.) has spurned earmarks, seeking no funds for pet projects in the upcoming fiscal year.
Yet Clinton is continuing to request billions for earmarks, most of which will go to her home state.
Senator Obama requested 91 million dollars last year, while Senator McCain didn't request any additional spending beyond the budget. Earlier this year, Senator Clinton voted in favor of a one year moratorium on earmarks, yet she is now the largest earmark spender in the Senate. |

2.3 billion is chickenfeed compared to the earmarks for Iraq. Consider that upgrading 20 miles of a 4 lane highwayto a 6 lane highway can cost 200 million, that is not so much for a public transportation project. It pays for itself over time. So would wise spending to protect our ports from terrorism. I suppose I'd like to hear what the earmarks are for before I would issue a Pavlov-ian condemnation.

Once the treaty is signed and permanent...no recourse...there would be no more incentive to protect trade unionists. The starting flag would drop and the race to start killing would begin and no sanctions (see permanent status) would be available to stop the killing. Some, no doubt, look forward to open season on trade unionists. That would spell higher profits for the capitaled elites, which would make some sectors very happy.
