Politico is reporting that since liberals in Congress passed a FISA extension bill that did not contain immunity for companies that cooperate with law enforcement, this debate is likely to extend through the elections this November.
I think this could drag out through the election,” said Caroline Fredrickson, legislative director for the American Civil Liberties Union, which opposes immunity. “For a lot of Democrats, they would much rather see the next president — even if it is John McCain — sign whatever they pass into law.”
While Fredrickson has an ally in Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), who voted against the bill offering immunity last month, it seems highly unlikely Reid would have the 60 votes necessary to even bring the House bill up for debate in the Senate.
Aides to Reid said Monday that lawmakers would “soon” begin negotiations over the recess with the hope of working toward a conference on the House and Senate bills.
However, it appears to be a long road, with the immunity issue dividing the Democratic caucus and deep divisions remaining between the two parties.
While America remains exposed without the renewal legislation, the House leadership has called for a two-week vacation. There may, however, be little sense of urgency with the likes of the ACLU declaring that we're not likely to see any progress in dealing with this important matter until after November - nine months after the law expired. |

Ok clueless nfdel: What in IRAQ has happened that made us safer here? al qaeda in Iraq is there now and Iran awaits in the wings to pull its politcal strings and make part of Iraq its own by proxy, and our miltary readiness is wasting away after troops get "stop-lossed" over and over again. And our borders are as open as ever. What is safer about these things, genious?

I feel that I recognize that we have not been attacked in the United States. The continued escalation of issues during the Cold War and following the Cold War were initially never recognized, and after they were recognized, they were ignored.
I support what is being done. Those I know that have served feel that we are serving the Iraqi people. Not everyone will be happy, but we must move forward.

Why should the telecoms get immunity if they did nothing wrong. What the christofascist don't want you to know is the neo cons were spying on Americans before 9/11. These companies have lawyers on their payroll and if they thought they were breaking the law they would have refused. We saw what happened to the one company that did refuse, Quest, they drove him out of business in retaliation. Freedom watch? This site is more like hitlers use of propaganda during his rise. Taking away the liberties and the protection of our laws under the constitution is not freedom. It is called fascism when the rights of the corporation are put ahead of the people. Calling everyone who disagrees with you a liberal as a way to brand them in an unfavoranle light is unamerican. As a liberal who did serve during war time I resent the way the neo cons have used words and innundo to paint the majority of true Americans as traitors. Because I disagree with my republican friends I do not see them as unamerican. The problem is not with the liberals in the country, the problem lies with the neo con christofascist who say if you are not with us then you are against us. I paid $3.76 a gallon today so I could bring democracy to a country that does not want us to occupy their country. I spent $68. dollars today on gas for a war that was based on lies, just like the lies that the telecoms need retroactive immunity, something that does not exist. You cannot give immunity until there is a crime. Was there a criminal act by the telecoms to spy on Americans.

Greetings Keemobaby,
It seems to me that you are one frustated little progressive. I can see why, of course. Bush's 2004 reelection, the failure of the democratic controled congress to remove the troops from Iraq, or even getting a timetable for their withdrawing, and the amazing success of the surge that has put the Iraq war on the back burner in the left wing controlled media. What you need to understand is that we are winning the war, and that we are going to win it in the long run with McCain as President of the great UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
I would recommend that you accept these facts, because once you do, you will be a much happier (and kinder) person, and the smart ones among us will take your comments more seriously.
TATA my little one.
