A Washington Post op-ed written by Micheal Gerson traces the evolution of Senator Obama's positions on the Iraq War as they seem to evolve with popular public opinion.
Obama did indeed oppose the war early on. But he did not become an antiwar leader in Congress. He is not Dennis Kucinich -- and thank goodness. Obama's initial foreign policy instincts -- refusing to tie the hands of the military with arbitrary deadlines -- were not radical. I find this reassuring.
But there is little doubt that Obama has gained in political support among Democrats as his positions on Iraq have become progressively antiwar. His March 2008 withdrawal deadline -- which is up now -- would have undone the Anbar Awakening, massively strengthened al-Qaeda and increased civilian carnage. And Obama will find -- as John Kerry found in 2004 -- that Americans are suspicious of a prospective commander in chief who votes against funding U.S. troops in the field.
The Iraq war determined the paths for McCain and Obama. But there is a large difference between them. McCain eventually won his nomination because he showed political courage in the face of overwhelming pressure. Obama may eventually win his nomination because he surrendered to that pressure.
If President George W. Bush had listened to the public opinion polls instead of listening to those advocating a change in strategy to achieve victory, the surge never would have happened and Iraq would now be run by al Qaeda. In a stunning turnaround, recent polls suggest that there has been a perceptible shift in public opinion, with a Pew poll showing a majority (53 percent) now agreeing that “the U.S. will ultimately succeed in achieving its goals” in Iraq. True leadership is doing what’s right by the country – even when it’s unpopular.
USA Today is reporting that the Senate has voted to allow many of President Bush's tax cuts to expire in the next fiscal year.
Democratic rivals Clinton of New York and Obama of Illinois both voted to extend only some of Bush's tax cuts while allowing cuts in income tax rates and investments expire. They joined other Democrats in a 52-47 vote against extending $376 billion of them. ...
..."Democrats are quietly but very assuredly paving the way for a massive, economy-choking, tax increase," said Rep. Jim McCrery, R-La.
The Bush tax cuts helped keep the economy strong in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 9/11, leading to 7 years of unprecedented economic growth. As the economy begins to slow, now is not the time to let taxes rise through inaction. Liberals in Congress may dispute the notion that allowing tax cuts to expire is tantamount to a tax hike, but we think President Bush had an appropriate response: “Milk expires. Taxes increase. And we know the difference.” |

>>>>>>>> don't remember anybody complaining that the last recession was Clinton's fault<<<<<<<<< Hannity still says it every time he mentions the economy. Larry Kudlow asays it once a week. Lush Rimbaugh used to say it some time ago. But I have not listened so much anymore since "all rant, all the time' wears thin and righty politics is predictable and boring.

Hi Keemobaby,
If politics is so boring , why do you continuously participate on this blog that deals with politics? Are you a glutton for punishment? Do you have a desperate need to be bored and miserable? If so my little one, your problem is more than being uninformed or uneducated regarding politics and economics. You desperatly need a Freudian psychoanalysist. The good news about your problem is that deep down inside you, you want the USA to win in Iraq, because an American victory will make you miserable, and being miserable is what you are seeking.

I did not call you Mr. Know-it-all. Keeemosabe translation = Mr. Know-it-all.
If I had a proper dicriptor of you I'd say you are just another posturing redneck, Bubba. You have nothing in your quiver other than empty personal blahblah blah...It you had anything intelligent or substative to say, you would have said it by now. But you don't and you haven't.

>> As the economy begins to slow, now is not the time to reverse this proven element of economic resilience. Right. Bush economic policies I suppose are not in your view responsible for this slowdown which will assuredly become a recession. (unless Wall Street is bailed out of its housing credit securitization shenanigans) Maybe this slowdown can be blamed on Clinton. Or may you can say that the market fears a Dem win in the next election. But, "Oh! We can't say that because then we'd have to say that the downturn Bush inherited was caused by fear of a Bush election. But having it both ways never stopped us before so let's be inconsistent as usual and hope nobody notices."

Actually I see you with the need to embarrass yourself only to realize it later. If you'll notice, righties really can'tcompete with keeemosabe around. Many have just left or are watching from the sidelines their compadres get educated by me., Keeemosabe, which is the name Tonto used call the Lone Ranger "MR. Know-it-all,, but in a respectfully humble way. Not that you could understand respect of ideas new to your narrow universe.

To "The Patriot", (now there’s a misnomer! HEY! Calling all righties---Is this the best you got???? Tell me it isn’t so.) Seems the only "issue" you feel qualified to challenge me on is my statement about righty politics being boring. Let me explain. Usually on all the righty radio and Faux News shows like Hannity insanity and Colmes, the righties ramble on unchallenged because there are usually 2 or 3 righties over-talking "balancing" point of view. In righty radio callers are screened to the point where 95% are self-identified "dittoheads". The "hosts" claim any common sense position to be theirs and all nonsense to be of the left. They mostly claim to know how and what other people from the "other side" think, thereby making grotesque over-usage of straw man technique, where a false and weak premise is trotted out and knocked down with great flourish. And no substantive guests from the other side are present to challenge the nonsense. This forum does sometimes give the other side a chance to be heard. Some of the authors/editors though can't handle hearing a true airing of the issues and remove posts that are too challenging to their sensibilities or belief systems. But most posts are uncensored and do allow the other side to explain and illuminate the mysterious lefty side of an issue. Perhaps this is the only forum that some righties have ever heard from a member of the other side's point of view, from the horses' mouth, though I don't really claim to speak for the whole of the left, because many phony viewpoints presented are falsely id'd as left are only strawman stuff and raw demagoguery.

To "The Patriot" ...continued.......Now you bring the whole "discussion" to the point of ridiculous posturing. You have repeatedly repeated the only "point" you have. You epitomise boring. You have brought boring to an exciting new level. I now look forward to new heights of boring as only a self-id'd righty could do.

Aaahhhh Keemobaby,
Do I sense that you are getting more and more frustrated. Yes I do my little one.
To start, little progressives like you must think that you are insulting me by calling me a red neck. Well, you're not. I used to be a construction worker and my neck did get red after a hard days work . Of course you wouldn't know because you never have had a hard days work in your life. Little progressives such as you are parasites. You suck the blood out the working class, and then get frustrated when the working class fights back.
You want to call me Bubba, go for it my little frustrated progressive, if that's the best you have, it will have to do. I mean, here you are trying to insult people, and you can't even succeed at that. What a waste you are, considering that you can't even succeed at what you do best (insulting others).
So, you claim that I can't bring anything intelligent to the discussion. Well my little one, stating the fact that you a little frustrated progressive is an intelligent thing to do. And as I mentionned before (which you do not seem to have the intellligence to understand), the day you educate yourself and seek help for your metal problems is the day you will post something intelligent and is the day I will respond to your political comments.

AAAAhhhh my little Keemobaby,
I think it is so cute, you trying to sound like an educator. Sort of like my little 4 year old niece, when she tries to explain something (but without the insults you seem so keen on including in your uneducated post). So please understand that Keemobaby is much more appropriate for you. You are nothing but a mean and frustrated little progressive that acts like a spoiled little child when others don't agree with him or her.
Another interestig point concerning you is that you are so weak minded that you need to join a blog, where eveybody is polite, to spead your lies and insults (except me, I don't mind treating intellectually inferior lefties like you, the way you treat others. I am not as compassionate as my fellow conservatives when it comes to dealing with your kind).
You belong on the daily kos, but I don't think you have the mental capacity to compete with the insults of that bunch of uneducated progressives. So, you join a blog where everybody is polite (except me dealing with you) because you thought you could be the top dog when it comes to insulting others. But as you are slowly realizing, you can't even compete with a peaceful and kind conservative such as me. What a pity for you. Are you totally worthless.
Lastly my little one, why do you participate in these political blogs if politics is so boring? Your desire to be miserable is a mental weakness that you must accept, and begin to deal with it. Once you have done that, you will probably be a happy conservative of the right, and you will truly be able to properly participate in intelligent debates.
Well, time to go my little one. Have a good day Keemobaby.

Greetings Keemobaby,
I don't remember anybody complaining that the last recession was Clinton's fault. Actually, intelligent people recognized that that recession was part of the normal economic cycle or ups and downs. When I say intelligent people, I do not include the democrats that tried to pin the recession on Bust by labeling it the "Bush recession". Don't you remember that, my little keemobaby.
As to the current economic problems, we can also conclude that they are simply part of the normal economic cycle that has been going for a very long time. However, by allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire, the economic downturn will only worsen.
What you need to do now my little one, is to educate yourself in economics. With such knowledge, you will be happier because you will be taken seriously in these debates.

Hi Keemobaby,
So you call me "MR. Know-it-all". Well thank you!!!
To start, calling me MR after I have refferred to you as my little one must imply that you are accepting your lower position in the food chain. Good, there is hope for you after all.
Next, I understand that when compared to you and most lefties, I must seem like a person that "knows-it-all", but truly, I don't. I am very well informed in the world of politics and economics, but please undestand my little one that I don't "know-it-all".
Speak soon, my little one.
